How to succeed at business -
the science and the practice.

Everybody wants to succeed at business, yet very few actually do it.

Why?

Some people find it easy to succeed at business, sometimes doing it over and over again, apparently without even trying.

Again, why?

For centuries, people puzzled over these questions, but until recently no clear answers were to be had.  Was it because successful people were particularly hard-working?  Or particularly clever?  Or unusually lucky?  Or were they maybe in league with the Devil?  The fact was, nobody knew for sure.

So for centuries, people guessed.  They wrote books about their guesses, taught at college with their guesses, and sometimes even became famous with their guesses.  But always, they were guessing!

Until recently, that is.

About half a century ago, in the 1950's, an American professor by the name of David McClelland decided to stop guessing, and apply some science to the subject.  This website is devoted to the science he founded:  the science of how people succeed at business.

Science has a particular method of looking for answers, one that involves a mixture of careful observation, experimentation and theorizing.  It is an immensely successful combination, and has created the modern world.  Using science, people have discovered electricity and penicillin, and put men on the moon.  Indeed, so successful is science at finding answers, that it was inevitable that sooner or later, somebody would use it to look for the truth about why some people succeed at business, and yet not others.  Perhaps the only wonder is that it took so long.

Be that as it may, for the past half century or so scientists have worked to pierce together the sectrets of success at business, gradually revealing much about the ways that ambitious people advance themselves in the world.  This research, and the clues it provides for people wishing to get ahead in life, are the subject of this site, which tries to answer the burning question:

"what does a person have to do to succeed at business, whether as an entrepreneur, business owner or employee?"

The site is organized in the following sections:
